Horizon 2020 is the largest EU Research and Innovation Program ever, with nearly €80 billion of funding available over seven years (2014 to 2020).
Horizon 2020 funds high-potential innovations developed by SMEs through the SME instrument. The SME instrument offers Europe's brightest and boldest entrepreneurs the chance to step forward and request funding for breakthrough ideas with the potential to create entirely new markets or revolutionize existing ones.
Gaining world recognition in October 2015, GiliOcean Technology was officially selected as a promising technology by the EU Commission, becoming an SME Instrument and passing on to Phase 2 of the program while receiving funding for additional R&D.
The program focuses on breakthrough technologies in its field, to provide sustainable protein to feed the growing world population while protecting the marine environment. As part of this program, GiliOcean Technologies continues to develop and improve its technology along with other products that aim to further enhance the system’s performance, making the process more efficient, streamlined, and cost-effective while reducing the negative possible impacts on the environment
Leon H. Charney School of Marine Sciences -University of Haifa
Leon H. Charney School of Marine Sciences, based at the University of Haifa, recently inaugurated two new long-term marine ecological research stations which focus on the Levantine Sea region at its doorstep.
The laboratories focus on coastal water research and monitoring of the ecology and species in shallow seas, as well as the anthropogenic impact on the marine environment.
Their research projects to date include deep exploration technology (soft arm robotics for efficient collection in the deep sea); marine pathogens (discovery and tackling antibiotic-resistant pathogens); natural sunscreen compounds in macroalga; heterologous expression of symbiont-DNA is used to reveal novel compounds (natural products).
